Read the odometer daily, not per trip — that is what makes a missing entry obvious. Judge km per litre on the month total, never on a single day.
Questions
What should a vehicle log book record?
Per day: the date, opening and closing odometer, kilometres run, route or purpose, diesel filled in litres and rupees, and who drove. At the foot of the month: total kilometres, total diesel, total spend and the average km per litre. That last figure is the one that tells you whether a truck is getting worse.
How do I work out km per litre from a log book?
Divide the month total kilometres by the month total litres — not the daily figures. A single day can show anything depending on where the tank happened to be at each reading. Across a month those errors cancel out, which is why the monthly average is the only honest number and why the total row exists.
Is the vehicle log book free to download?
